Berberine HCl in Memo Volt

A metabolic compound with the widest gap on this list between studied dose and capsule dose.

Why it is in the formula

The best-studied ingredient on the label, studied for something other than memory, at doses this blend cannot contain.

Berberine HCl used in Memo Volt

What it is

Berberine is a yellow isoquinoline alkaloid extracted from several plants including barberry, goldenseal and Coptis chinensis. It activates AMP-activated protein kinase, which is the same broad pathway metformin acts on, and that mechanism underlies most of its research.

What the research shows

Berberine has a substantial human trial literature for type 2 diabetes and dyslipidaemia. Meta-analyses report meaningful reductions in fasting glucose, HbA1c and LDL cholesterol at 900 to 1,500mg daily, usually split across two or three doses because of its short half-life and gut effects. Comparisons with metformin have found broadly similar glycaemic effects in some trials, which is a genuinely striking result for a botanical. The cognitive evidence is preclinical and indirect: better glucose control is associated with slower cognitive decline in long-horizon population studies.

Limitations

The dose problem is at its sharpest here. Trials use 900 to 1,500mg daily, split into multiple doses. A once-daily capsule serving containing ten ingredients cannot hold that and still hold anything else. Whatever berberine is in Memo Volt is almost certainly well below its studied dose, and single-dose administration is not how it was studied either.

Dose in Memo Volt: undisclosed. Human research uses 900–1500mg/day in trials. Because the label is a proprietary blend, there is no way to know whether the capsule contains that amount, a fraction of it, or a trace. This applies to every ingredient in the product and is explained in full on our evidence page.

Safety and interactions

Berberine is the main reason people report loose stools, cramping and nausea in the first fortnight. More importantly, it genuinely lowers blood glucose, so combining it with metformin, a sulfonylurea or insulin creates a real hypoglycaemia risk. It also inhibits CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, which means it can raise levels of a range of prescription drugs. Avoid in pregnancy. This is the ingredient to name specifically when you talk to your prescriber.

Our verdict

Genuinely effective at its real dose for its real purpose. In this blend it is most likely underdosed for benefit while still carrying its interaction profile.
